If you suffer from dry skin, it can be easy to only look to moisturising products. While parched skin does need an injection of hydration, you may also need to consider your complete skincare regime. Think cleansing, exfoliating and hydrating. Use a non-stripping body cream in the shower to soften the skin without drying it out for example. Moisturise as soon as you get out of the tub with a dry skin formula body lotion, and focus on extra dry areas (hands, feet and lips are prime suspects) with lotions rich in glycerin.
What causes dryness
Dry skin is caused when the skin’s natural moisture barrier is broken down, leaving it parched and unable to retain its usual dewy suppleness. Skin that lacks moisture is left dry, rough and sometimes itchy. This can be caused by sun exposure, cold air and other factors such as ageing. The products you use can also cause skin to become dry. Watch out for soaps and body cleansers with detergents and perfumes, which can irritate skin and strip it of its natural oils. If you suffer from dry skin, avoid hand sanitisers if possible, as the alcohol will remove even more moisture.
Soothe delicate areas
There are many reasons why sensitive skin can strike, but it is commonly caused by allergens. Some of us simply have skin which is easily irritated. Sensitive skin needs extra care and a gentle and delicate skincare regime. Choose mild products which are designed to protect sensitive skin without leaving behind heavy residue. It’s also a good idea to avoid products which are scented, contain alcohol or are oily as these can all trigger sensitivity. And don’t forget the SPF to help protect the delicate skin against powerful UVA and UVB rays.
